DPMA Nutzerforum 2026 in Munich – Our Key Takeaways from the IP-Community
PATOffice attended the DPMA User Forum 2026 in Munich. Our key takeaways: quantum technology, national IP strategy, and the growing role of AI in IP management.
On March 17th and 18th, Munich hosted the DPMA User Forum 2026 — and once again, the German Patent and Trade Mark Office's flagship event proved why it's one of the most important gatherings in the IP community. Well-organized, content-rich, and above all: a space for real, meaningful conversations between professionals who don't just manage IP — they think strategically about it.
We were there. Here's what stood out.
1. Quantum Technology: Tomorrow's IP Positions Are Being Secured Today
The headline topic of this year's forum was spot-on: quantum technology. What once felt like distant future talk is rapidly becoming concrete — applications are maturing, investment is accelerating, and the competitive landscape is intensifying fast.
For IP professionals, this raises an urgent question: How do you secure the right IP positions in a field that's still taking shape?
The answer lies in proactive intelligence. Companies that aren't investing in technology trend analysis, innovation monitoring, and early-stage technology scouting right now are already falling behind. Patent portfolios in emerging technology fields don't get built overnight — and the window to establish strong IP positions is narrowing.
2. In-Person Connection Still Can't Be Replicated
Beyond the sessions, it was the direct, face-to-face conversations that made this forum genuinely valuable. We were especially glad to connect with Dr. Nikolaus Buchheim and Dr. Julian Wienand in person — catching up, exchanging perspectives, and thinking through the latest developments in the IP space together.
These moments are a reminder of why events like the DPMA User Forum matter beyond the agenda. IP strategy is a team sport — and some of the best ideas come from conversations that happen in the hallway, not on the main stage.
3. A National IP Strategy for Germany: Long Overdue
One of the forum's most compelling moments came from Peter Berg (Infineon): Germany needs a clear, actionable, and coherent national IP strategy.
This isn't a new call — but it's more urgent than ever. In a world where patents and IP rights are increasingly used as geopolitical and economic instruments, reactive IP management simply isn't enough anymore. IP needs to become a core strategic function — at the company level and at the national level alike.
Organizations that treat Intellectual Property as a genuine competitive advantage need more than a filing system. They need active, data-driven IP strategy — with clear objectives, measurable outcomes, and the right tools to execute.
4. AI in IP: The Conversation Happening Everywhere
AI wasn't always front and center on the main stage — but it was everywhere else. In the breaks, in the side conversations, in the informal discussions between sessions: AI is on everyone's mind in the IP world right now.
How is AI reshaping patent research? What role does machine learning play in analyzing patent data at scale? And how can AI-powered IP management tools be meaningfully integrated into existing workflows? These are no longer theoretical questions — they're being actively answered in the IP departments of leading companies today.
Bottom Line: IP Is Becoming a Core Strategic Function
The DPMA User Forum 2026 confirmed what we see every day at PATOffice: Intellectual Property is evolving from a protective mechanism into a core strategic function.
Patents are no longer just defense. They're a competitive advantage, an innovation signal, and a strategic asset — all at once. Companies that get this aren't just filing more patents. They're actively managing, evaluating, and leveraging their entire IP portfolio to drive better business decisions.
That's exactly what PATOffice is built for. We help companies turn their patent data into actionable intelligence — with AI-driven analysis, automated patent monitoring, and a clear view of competitors, technology trends, and market developments.
