IP Service World Munich 2022 - How we experienced THE event of the IP industry

We were at the IP Service World 2022 in Munich

Munich became the meeting place of the Intellectual Property world with the IP Service World on November 21 and 22.

With almost 700 visitors, 60 international speakers and around 75 exhibitors, IP Service World is the trade fair that no one from the IP industry should miss. The incredibly diverse program had a lot to offer for visitors and exhibitors - 3 conference rooms with exciting use cases, new software technologies and interesting contributions from the industry, as well as valuable panel discussions covered the complete range of the current IP landscape. But not only during the day there was a program. On Monday evening, all trade fair visitors and exhibitors moved towards Munich city center to the Augustiner Wirtshaus. A lively atmosphere, conversations not usually held at a desk, and a friendly get-together were the order of the day.

Our team at IP Service World

We were at IP Service World this year with 3 people - with our marketing manager Alexandra Ess on board on Monday afternoon and evening - mainly to get a first-hand impression of the IP industry. Core team of our booth were our newest team member Julian, who quickly mingled with people due to his previous job at PAVIS and met many old acquaintances, our Head of Technology and AI Ralf, who was especially interested in the scientific presentations, as well as Lukas our CEO, who, completely in his element, strode from booth to booth (in the truest sense of the word - Lukas is really huge) and had a chat with, we assume, almost all 700 fair participants. Our appearance at IP Service World was slightly different this year. We adapted our branding to our product and the homepage and appeared as a pure software solution. We hope you enjoyed it.

Collaboration is the key to success

We gained so many valuable insights at IP Service World, we met new competitors and/or collaborators, we learned about the challenges of existing and potential new customers, and we experienced that there is cooperation rather than opposition. This became especially clear when we set out for the Augustiner Wirtshaus on Kaufingerstraße in Munich on Monday evening, after a long day at the trade fair. Even the walk to the evening event turned out to be a fun and informal get-together of colleagues - not competitors. Rather than examining and analyzing the products and services of others, they thought about how they could benefit from each other and provide customers with appropriate added value.

We at PATOffice love this approach and are already looking forward to significantly shaping the future of the IP industry.

Our Key Takeaways from IP Service World

We at PATOffice are now back in the office and have sat down again as a team: What exactly are we taking away from IP Service World 2022? There has been so much change in us and our product over the last few months. That's exactly what we're noticing in the IP industry as well. Without a doubt, we can and would like to claim that the patent industry is undergoing a major change, or is already in the midst of it. We personally think this is great - this change brings new technologies and software solutions that make this field faster, more modern, more efficient and above all more exciting and fun.

But please find here a summary of our key takeaways from IP Service World Munich:

Artificial intelligence is no longer a unique selling point

Everyone is now talking about artificial intelligence (AI for short) - especially when it comes to patent management. Where else do you have "easy" access to large amounts of data, with such valuable content as innovation management, IP compliance or even technical developments and competitive analyses? It quickly became clear that presented tools at IP Service World were/are out of date without AI. AI is a standard that is now taken for granted.

Our challenge must now be to understand the functionalities of AI used in a penetrating way and to use it in the right places. Not everyone succeeds in this, often AI is still "just" part of the product so that you can sell it.

At PATOffice, we have been taking on this challenge for years and only use our individual AI in exactly those places where it really makes sense - always enriched with the knowledge of the responsible users of our software. Thus, our AI is unique and cannot be copied.

Automation and digitization are state of the art

Automation and digitization are terms that have not only been buzzwords since yesterday. Other industries have been much faster here in recent years. BUT: The IP industry is picking up speed. Automation and digitalization have become an integral part of the patent system. Cloud-based web applications, automated workflows and digital tools have also arrived in the large corporates, mainly due to the Corona pandemic. Young companies even presuppose them. Our insight: PATOffice is exactly on the right track - not only is our web-based software solution precisely geared to this, but the corresponding features also map automation and digitization - and we are far from being at the end :)

The novel unitary patent raises questions

In spring 2023, the time has come: the unitary patent is coming. But how exactly it will work, what additional costs we as a SaaS company will face, or how we will have to adapt our software solution is still a big question mark for many.

We are already working on the corresponding adjustments and are eagerly awaiting the introduction of the unitary patent.

Next year's IP Service World is scheduled for November 20 and 21, 2023. We will definitely be there again and are very much looking forward to welcoming you there.
